What laws protect New Yorkers from employment discrimination?

These are the main federal laws that protect employees against discrimination:

Title VII Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination against applicants and employees based upon race, color or religion.

The Age Discrimination Act in Employment (ADEA) protects workers over 40.

Americans with Disabilities Act - Protects qualified persons with a disability against workplace discrimination; requires reasonable accommodation for disabilities

Pregnancy Discrimination Act - This prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy. It also applies to treating female applicants or employees unfavorably because they are pregnant, have had a child, or have a related medical condition.

Equal Pay Act requires that men in the same workplace receive equal pay for equal work in equal or substantially equivalent jobs. All forms of pay are covered. Employers cannot lower the pay to any group in order to comply with this law.

Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Bill (GINA) prohibits discrimination based on genetic information in relation to employment and health insurance.

New York City, New York State also have strong anti-discrimination laws.

New York City Human Rights Law prohibits discrimination, harassment, and retaliation on the job based upon age, alienage, citizenship status, color or gender.

New York State Human Rights Law Protected classes include gender identity or expression and age, creed or disability, domestic violence victim, gender identity or expression, marital status, military standing, national origin, predisposing genes, pregnancy-related conditions, prior arrest record, conviction record, race/color, sexual orientation, or retaliation against unlawful discriminatory practices.
